Kolkata: Hand-Pulled Rickshaws

Hand-pulled rickshaws in Kolkata are one of the last remaining examples of this traditional form of transport in India. Rickshaw pullers manually carry passengers through narrow streets and busy neighborhoods, often under physically demanding conditions and for very low income. They are mainly found in older parts of the city and have become a symbol of social inequality as well as a reminder of Kolkata’s colonial-era urban history. Despite ongoing criticism of the working conditions, they still serve as a practical means of transport in densely populated residential areas where larger vehicles cannot easily pass.
